3 cheers for Science

Took this nugget and his sis to the Lawrence Hall of Science over the holiday weekend to get their fix of all sorts of experiments and facts. I think he’s happiest surrounded by fossils, physics, and engineering gadgets. This kid glows. And he doesn’t stop. He is energized by everything he learns and he spews our stuff I never knew he already learned, and stuff I’ve never learned. Love seeing him in his element. 💕🔬🚀

Kitty treats

Had a fun coffee date with this little kitten while big brother was at theater class last week. Holden’s having a great time with the Bay Area Children’s Theatre program. I’m so excited to see how it goes for him and what he thinks. Given his Daddy, (and Daddy’s family), theater & music are very much part of his DNA and I think he’ll have a blast. I’m also excited for Fin to give it a whirl but she’s still very much focused only on being with Momma right now and wasn’t ready to give it a go.

Oh, and the cookies, well, she said they were delicious. They must have been as they were devoured in seconds.

Finally Home – Bill’s Office

So many people have asked me to share more of our home and I’m happy to do so. Let’s start in Bill’s home office since he’s the reason we get to enjoy this gorgeous house.

I love how this space came out and I think he does too. There is a very well-designed masculine feel and a quietness to the space. Bill’s music and fly-fishing loves were central to the design; as well as how he actually prefers to work, because, let’s face it, we need him to be comfortable while he’s at work. I mean, he’s the only one that collects a paycheck around here!

Bill wanted a standing desk – we had our furniture maker create a custom maple desktop that matched the fly fishing storage drawers on the left side of his built-in bookcases and cabinets. He loves collaborating and spreading out, so we put a small table with the coolest leather chairs in the corner right next to a moveable flat screen monitor that can double as a conference screen, or a TV to watch sports while hiding from the rest of us. The comfy chair in the corner is perfect for sitting back and reading a book – one of Bill’s favorite ways to relax. No, he doesn’t get nearly enough time to relax.

We wanted Bill to be able to get work done during the day, while the kids are usually home. To do this, we placed Bill’s office separate from our main house, accessed through our outdoor courtyard and loggia. This way, he isn’t as likely to be interrupted by our activities. To make it more functional, we also added a half bath right off his office. I fell in love with the grasscloth wallpaper. The fish art piece is one of our Cape Cod finds. Additional pieces of art and mementos fill the walls of the space.

Funny story about this room… From the first day it was painted, I felt something was off. I was assured it was fine. Turns out my instinct was on the money (pretty much always the case, no?). When we had the drywall repairs done, we learned that our first crew of painters (the horrible ones) used the wrong sheen of the color resulting in an odd, shiny look. Once the new (and way better) painters used the right sheen, the room was a 1000% prettier.

Now, of course, as luck would have it, Bill’s travel schedule is ramping up. In this case, if you build it, he’ll start working far away from it. Field of dreams doesn’t seem to apply here.

A big cut

The photo on the left was taken about 3.5 years ago, a year before I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and before I started losing an excessive amount of hair. The photo on the right is today. You can probably see it is now shorter – in fact, over 12″ shorter. I love the new cut my trusted stylist Hillary did – she’s amazing and has been so supportive of my entire process. Simultaneously I’m missing my old look – I loved having long hair. I think because the cut was motivated by the need to balance the effects of my disease, not because I just wanted a change, you know?

Thankfully, it seems my massive shed is slowing and we see a great deal of new hair growth. I still have a lot of work to do but thankfully, things appear to be moving in the right direction and I’m hopeful the worst is behind me. I’m so appreciative of my village and my team who keep me moving forward, provide support & encouragement.

Bye long hair… many I’ll see you again someday. Maybe. Maybe I’ll decide I like this long bob, shorter hair look better. At least I can still pull it back into a pony tail or a messy twist. And, there is always extensions, right? Right.

Working lunch

On Tuesdays we rock our massive to-do list. This is my partner in crime and she keeps up pretty well. She’s also my wellness coach – I know I have to stop to feed her and keep her regularly hydrated, as well as making time for fun things between all our projects.

She’s such a good sport about doing all the mundane things – shopping, appointments, errands, meetings, workouts, you name it. She’s also very excited to do the fun things – like mani-pedi’s, coffee shops, park playdates, and of course haircuts with Miss Hillary. This girl (and her brother) are perhaps the easiest children to haul around to do the weirdest and most boring things. They make my job easier in so many ways.

Can you believe how grown up she’s looking already? Hey clock… slow it down already. Especially at night when I could use an extra hour or four of sleep, m’kay?

Stare down

Emmy’s mastered the “begging for food” stare, the “I see a camera is focused on me” stare, and the “hey, you forgot me outside while you’re working so open the darn door already” stare.

I’ll let you guess which one this is. She does take pictures better than I do. At least, like most celebrities, she’s consistent in her pose. She knows what seems to work best anyway.

Freckled

This morning I caught the slightest smattering of freckles on this sweet gems face. They are just barely visible. I’m not sure why but I wasn’t expecting them, even though I grew up with them, as did many of my family members. Freckles or not, this girl is the absolute cutest. 💕

Tricked. Still winter.

And just like that, the cold rolled back in wiping out our abnormal 70+ degree temps that I was a huge fan of, global warming consequences or not. It is officially freezing. I mean the thermometer says 50 but it feels waaaaay colder than that. Time to layer up the sweaters, scarves, and boots.

Moms take Pixar

Thanks to our friend Ari, we had an amazing behind the scenes tour of Pixar Studios. What an epic day. I think it is safe to say we all want to go back to work tomorrow if it is in this amazing place – though most of us are greatly under qualified! So much creativity and talent. So inspiring. Such a wonderful group of Mom friends to spend the day with too! ❤️
